Leadership in Education
2018 – Present
Founder and CEO
The Beckmead Trust, specialising in the Social, Emotional & Mental Health (SEMH) sector
Under my leadership, the Trust has expanded from a single school to 16 schools across over 30 sites in the South of England, educating 800 children with SEMH and employing 600 staff. On completion of our current building programme, the Trust will be schooling 1,100 children, including 80 in residence.
I formed the multi-academy trust to allow me and my team to provide sustainable interventions for schools in difficulty across the UK, building on the transformation I led at Beckmead school. Under the auspices of the DfE, our work has been recognised for significantly improving failing schools through strategic oversight, strong leadership, and a deep commitment to high-quality education in the SEMH sector.
In my recent dealings with stakeholders such as local authorities and the DfE, I have been involved with strategic planning at local and national level and have conducted reviews for local authorities and the Ministry of Justice. I have also collaborated with the Centre for Social Justice on several research projects.
2012 – 2018
Head Teacher
Beckmead School, Croydon (SEMH)
Beckmead School had been failing for decades when I assumed leadership. In
partnership with a visionary council, we started with a failing school on a single site and a derelict, smashed-up building – supposedly for 50 children, but with only 50% attendance – and created an eight-site establishment with 320 students and 89% attendance, an excellent rate for the SEMH sector.
2008 – 2012
Head Teacher
The Nightingale and Elsley Federation, Wandsworth (EBD)
I was invited to take over at Elsley School following my successful turnaround of
Nightingale, its upper school. Elsley, for younger pupils with Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (EBD, the former designation for SEMH) had similarly been struggling. Within two years, we had improved the junior school from inadequate to outstanding, with both schools under my leadership receiving a total of five outstanding Ofsted ratings.
2002 – 2008
Head of School, later Head Teacher (from 2004)
Nightingale School, Tooting (EBD)
I oversaw a severely dysfunctional school which Ofsted had deemed unsafe due to high levels of violence and bullying. Through structured intervention, we restored order and built a foundation for future success.
After serving as Head of School, I was appointed Head Teacher and continued to work in a nurturing and therapeutic manner, including the planning and creation of Tom’s Farm, providing opportunities for pupils to learn about empathy while caring for animals. Under my leadership, the school moved from inadequate in all areas to outstanding by 2008.
Curriculum Vitae for the House of Lords Dr. Jonty Clark OBE Pg1
2000 – 2002
Education Manager
National Centre for Young People with Epilepsy (NCYPE)/Great Ormond Street Hospital Assessment Service
I led a multi-disciplinary team assessing highly complex children, producing a life plan for them, following each six-week placement.
1998 – 2000
Head of Upper School
National Centre for Young People with Epilepsy (NCYPE), Lingfield, Surrey
I was in charge of eight classes of extremely complicated children aged 12-16, overseeing 55 staff, and achieving successful Ofsted inspection results.
School Governorships
2011 – Present
Chair of Governors
Salmons Brook School, Enfield (SEMH)
I was invited by Enfield Council to be the chair of governors for this new-build free school which had been awarded to a mainstream trust lacking in SEMH expertise.
2010 – 2019
Chair of Governors
Cressey College, Croydon (SEMH)
From inception, I worked closely with the proprietor of this private, non-maintained school, leading on all aspects of governance, including financial rigour, and allowing the school to expand from 9 to 194 students.
Charitable Involvement
2018 – Present
Trustee
Unlocking Potential
I was instrumental in establishing The Corner School (Chair of Governors, 2018-2022), a specialist SEMH school for very young children for this Brent-based charity supporting disadvantaged children and young people. I continue to serve as the designated safeguarding trustee for the charity.
2022 – 2024
Co-Founder
Beckmead Express
This humanitarian aid initiative delivers essential supplies for displaced homeless civilians to the Polish-Ukrainian border in partnership with the Steiger Foundation. We have organised 12 trips and raised £439,000, ensuring that every penny was used for aid, while all drivers covered their own expenses (I have personally driven on each trip).
